On the sidelines of ‘Belt and Road Initiative’ meetings in Beijing, China, President Abdel Fatah El Sisi and Russian counterpart Vladimir Putin met and discussed the resumption of Russian flights to Egypt’s Sharm El Sheikh and Hurghada airports.
Presidential Spokesperson Bassam Radi said in a statement that the two presidents discussed boosting bilateral relations, including the resumption of Russian flights to Egypt. In this context, Putin praised the “efforts made by the Egyptian authorities in securing airports, which will support the resumption of Russian flights at the end of ongoing technical consultations between the two sides,” said Radi.
During Sisi and Putin’s meeting in Beijing, both leaders discussed other bilateral relations in fields of energy as Russia is building the first phase of Egypt’s first nuclear power plant in the Mediterranean city of Dabaa, Radi said.
“They also tackled cooperation in fields of railway, security and counter-terrorism,” Radi added, noting that regional and international issues of common concerns were also addressed.
Furthermore, Putin and Sisi discussed the preparations for the Russia-Africa summit due in October in Sochi.
During the meeting, President Sisi said Egypt is keen on deepening relations with Russia, especially after the signing of the strategic partnership agreement between the two countries in October 2018.
On his part, the Russian president said he is keen to continue coordination with President Sisi on different regional and international issues of common concern, adding Egypt plays a significant role as a key pillar of security and stability in the Middle East and Africa.
