President Abdel Fattah El Sisi has directed the government to increase the allowance for medical professions, including physicians working at university hospitals, by 75% at a total cost of EGP 2.25 billion.
The president also ordered the establishment of a risk fund for medical personnel, MENA reported.
Sisi's directives came during his meeting on Sunday with Prime Minister Mostafa Madbouli and the ministers of defense, higher education, finance and health, as well the president's adviser for health affairs.
"The meeting addressed the progress made in precautionary measures taken to counter the spread of the novel coronavirus (COVID-19)," Presidential Spokesman Bassam Rady said.
"In this regard, President Sisi praised health workers, who lead the state's efforts in the fight against coronavirus," the spokesman added.
"The president instructed the government to disburse exceptional bonuses for those currently working at the hospitals of isolation, fever and chest, as well as central laboratories nationwide," the spokesman noted.
President Sisi called for exploring the possibility of local manufacturing of medical supplies and devices, in addition to meeting any shortage in medical equipment and human cadres in various health facilities.
On her part, Health Minister Hala Zayed reviewed the latest statistic on the number of coronavirus cases.
She asserted that the infection rates in Egypt are relatively low, compared to the global rates of infection.
