Shoukry Stresses Importance of African Solidarity to Fight Terrorism

Today, Monday, Foreign Minister Sameh Shoukry participated in the consultative ministerial meeting between the African Peace and Security Council and the three African countries that are members of the United Nations Security Council, through the video conference feature.

Ambassador Ahmed Hafez, the official spokesman for the Ministry of Foreign Affairs, stated that the Minister of Foreign Affairs praised, during his participation in the meeting, the African approach that supports the continuation of coordination between the members of the Peace and Security Council of the African Union and the three African members of the United Nations Security Council, with the aim of supporting unified African interests and positions regarding peace and security issues on the continent.

Hafez added that Minister Shoukry stressed during the meeting the importance of African solidarity to support the continent’s resilience to all the crises it faces, especially terrorism and extremism, which requires the Security Council to assume its responsibilities in this regard, to aid African countries affected by terrorism and to support African initiatives on that matter.

The Minister of Foreign Affairs also clarified Egypt's belief in the important role played by regional groupings and mechanisms in establishing security and stability on the continent, in addition to the role that the Security Council can play to support the security capabilities of regional groupings and mechanisms, noting that from this standpoint, Egypt is intensifying its efforts to support capacity building.

African institutions in areas affected by terrorism through various means, including providing training courses for forces participating in African peacekeeping missions.

The spokesman concluded his statements by referring to the emphasis during the meeting on the need to pay due attention to the impact of climate repercussions on peace and security on the continent, which Egypt will seek, during its upcoming presidency of the Conference of the Parties to the United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change, to coordinate with African countries to defend the interests of the continent and to highlight their common positions and raise their concerns regarding the negative effects of climate change.
