Deadpool & Wolverine director Shawn Levy dropped an intriguing update on his upcoming Star Wars movie, as rumors swirl that filming could begin in September 2025.
The movie has been in a "holding pattern" for years now, initially delayed because of the writers' strike.
Levy moved on to other committments, including Deadpool & Wolverine, but there have been recent rumors of movement on the upcoming Star Wars film.
In a conversation with IndieWire, Levy appeared to hint that his next project is either Star Wars or another team-up with Hugh Jackman and Ryan Reynolds, a Boy Band movie that Reynolds is writing.
"Because “Deadpool & Wolverine” was so fulfilling, I’m quite happily open to whatever’s next. And yes, there’s a “Star Wars” movie that I’m developing, actually with our “Adam Project” screenwriter Jonathan Tropper. You never know what’s going to become undeniable and get made next."
Levy's comment comes immediately after recent reports from Hollywood insider Jeff Sneider that Levy was holding a window open to start shooting Star Wars in September 2025.
Moreover, there have been other rumors that Levy's movie is the mystery film slated for a December 2027 release.
Levy's latest remarks will certainly fuel speculation that his movie will be the next out the gate, now that The Mandalorian & Grogu has finished filming.
According to Sneider, Daisy Ridley's Rey will return here as a background character, a mentor figure in the New Jedi Order.
Ridley is known to be key to Lucasfilm's Star Wars hopes, with reports she's considered their one proven cinematic asset after the original trilogy characters were killed off during the sequels.
But Levy's comments also introduce a note of caution. He has plenty of other commitments, and it's entirely possible he'll wind up shooting Boy Band first - which would mean Star Wars got delayed again. It's safe to assume a decision will have been made by the time of Star Wars Celebration, when there'll certainly be a formal announcement.
Lucasfilm has developed something of a reputation for behind-the-scenes drama, and there are frankly far too many different Star Wars ideas in the works right now. Several of these projects appear to involve Rey, meaning that character's future will essentially be decided by which gets made first, with a character direction locked in. If Ridley's Rey is indeed only a secondary character in Levy's Star Wars movie, then she'll still need a strong presence to do her justice.
