EU Ambassador to Cairo Angelina Eichhorst highlighted the depth and evolution of the partnership between Egypt and the European Union, particularly in science, technology, research, and innovation, as the two sides mark 20 years of collaboration.

Speaking to Sada El-Balad English (SEE) , Eichhorst said the past two decades have been defined by “steady trust-building”—not only at the governmental level, but importantly between universities, research centers, and scientific institutions. This trust, she noted, has created “a strong and dynamic network that connects researchers across borders,” enabling joint projects and benefiting experts on both sides of the Mediterranean.

Eichhorst described Egypt–EU cooperation in scientific fields as “unique and balanced,” adding that ministers and the deputy prime minister have recently reaffirmed the central role of science, technology, and innovation in building resilient economies and societies. She pointed to long-standing programs such as Horizon, Marie Curie, PRIMA, and Erasmus+ as cornerstones of this partnership, fulfilling a vision that began in 2005.

Looking ahead, the ambassador revealed that the EU will launch new calls for proposals next week under the Horizon and PRIMA programs, with a focus on key priority areas including drought, food security, agriculture, water, and irrigation. “These are critical challenges for Egypt today, and the EU continues to be a major investor in research and innovation that addresses these areas,” she said.

She also underscored the significance of scientific and innovation collaboration highlighted during a recent summit, where—for the first time—scientists from Egypt and the EU met in a dedicated side event. “It shows how prominent these sectors have become,” Eichhorst explained, noting that EU President Ursula von der Leyen has repeatedly stressed the importance of defending and advancing science and technology at a time when some actors seek to undermine them.

Eichhorst pointed to growing economic cooperation as well. Trade and investment from EU member states in Egypt have continued to rise, she said, adding that the partnership is entering an especially promising phase as the region marks 30 years of the Barcelona Process and prepares to implement the newly launched Pact for the Mediterranean. The Pact, which spans science, technology, the economy, education, and research, is set to be adopted by EU heads of state and government. She stressed the vital role that parliamentarians will play in turning the Pact into action, noting Egypt’s leadership in the Parliamentary Assembly of the Union for the Mediterranean.

Addressing geopolitical issues, the ambassador reaffirmed the EU’s commitment to peace and humanitarian support. She recalled recent statements by EU Commissioner Haja Lahbib calling for an immediate stop to violence and renewed efforts toward peace, especially concerning the West Bank, Gaza, and the establishment of a Palestinian state. “This has been a consistent position of the European Union,” Eichhorst said, emphasizing the bloc’s dedication to stability and peace in the region.
