Hollywood star Johnny Depp will receive the Donostia Award, the highest accolade of Spain's San Sebastian Film Festival.

Organizers announced on Monday that Depp, best known for his roles as Jack Sparrow in the "Pirates of the Caribbean" franchise, will be honored on September 22 in recognition of his career.

Born in Kentucky in 1963, the star made his acting debut at the age of 21 in 1984's "A Nightmare on Elm Street".

Past recipients of the award include actors Meryl Streep, Richard Gere, Ian McKellen, and Robert De Niro.

The 69th edition of the San Sebastian International Film Festival, the highest-profile movie event in Spanish-speaking countries, will take place in the city of San Sebastian from September 17 to 25.

The festival was originally intended to honor Spanish language movies but has established itself as one of the most important movie festivals in the world.
