The South Korean Foreign Ministry announced on Thursday, that Seoul will provide humanitarian aid worth $3 million to the Japanese Ishikawa Prefecture to assist the region in coping with the effects of the earthquake that claimed the lives of more than 200 people.

South's Yonhap news agency quoted the ministry as saying in a statement, "The South Korean government hopes that it will assist in recovery efforts following the earthquake and the speedy return of residents to their daily lives in the affected areas."

It is worth mentioning that an earthquake with a magnitude of 7.6 on the Richter scale struck the Noto Peninsula and surrounding areas in Ishikawa Prefecture on New Year's Day.

Earlier this month, the South Korean presidential office announced that South Korean President Yoon Suk-yeol had sent a message to Japanese Prime Minister Fumio Kishida expressing his condolences to the families of the earthquake victims.

He also expressed his intention to assist Japan in recovery efforts and his desire for residents in the disaster-stricken areas to return to their normal lives as soon as possible.
