Russia's Gazprom announced on Saturday that it will halt gas supplies to Moldova from January 1, 2025, due to a debt dispute, at a time when Moldova is in a state of emergency over energy security in the country.

The move comes as several Eastern European countries brace for disruptions in Russian gas supplies, with Kyiv set to halt the flow of Russian gas through its territory in the coming days.

Moldova earlier this month declared a 60-day state of emergency ahead of the expected cutoff.

"Gazprom will restrict natural gas supplies to the Moldova to zero cubic mpd from 05:00 GMT on January 1, 2025," Gazprom said in a statement, accusing it of failing to settle debts.

The company added that it took this step “due to the Moldovan side’s refusal to settle the debts,” noting that Chișinău had not complied with the terms of the contracts concluded, warning that it “reserves the right to take further measures, including terminating the gas supply contract with Moldova.”

Russia supplies gas to Moldova via pipelines to the breakaway region of Transnistria, and the country relies heavily on a power plant located in Transnistria that uses Russian gas to generate electricity.
