In response to potential Ukrainian use of British weaponry against Russian territories, Russia's Foreign Ministry spokesperson Maria Zakharova stated yesterday that Russia would retaliate by targeting British objectives, both within and beyond Ukraine's borders.
Zakharova reiterated Moscow's warning, issued earlier this month, following remarks by British Foreign Secretary David Cameron, who asserted Ukraine's right to employ British-supplied arms in strikes against Russian targets.
Russia's response to Cameron's statement included anger and was cited among the reasons for conducting military exercises this month, simulating the launch of tactical nuclear missiles.
In another development, a decree signed by Russian President Vladimir Putin yesterday indicated that Russia would identify American assets, including securities, that could be used to compensate for any damages incurred if the United States seizes Russian property.
The decree allows Russia's relevant governmental committee for foreign asset sales to identify related assets and stipulates that compensation decisions will be made by the courts.
Meanwhile, US Treasury Secretary Janet Yellen urged G7 ministers gathering in Italy to pursue "more ambitious options" for utilizing frozen Russian assets to aid Ukraine.
The EU took initial steps towards an agreement earlier this month to seize revenues from frozen Russian assets for arming Ukraine, estimated between 2.5 and 3 billion euros annually.
Yellen welcomed this plan at a press conference preceding the meeting but emphasized the need for collective action on more ambitious options, considering all relevant risks and working together."
She aimed to present "concrete options" to G7 leaders, stressing that failure to take further action is not an option - not for Ukraine's future, nor for the stability of our economies and the security of our people.
