In October, Russia will begin sea trials for its first hydrogen-powered vessel, marking a significant step toward eco-friendly maritime technology.

The ship, named Ecobalt, is designed as a recreational boat capable of carrying 12 passengers and is equipped with a hydrogen-powered electrochemical generator. This groundbreaking project could pave the way for greener shipping technologies.

Oleg Savchenko, General Director of the Krylov State Research Center, a key institution behind the project, explained that Ecobalt is the first Russian ship to be equipped with a domestically manufactured hydrogen electrochemical generator.

This innovative system, based on fully imported technology, demonstrates Russia's push toward cleaner energy solutions.

The ship was constructed at the Gorky Zelenodolsk Shipyard by Ak Bars Shipbuilding Corporation, following a design created by the Central Design Bureau "Baltsudoproekt," which is part of the Krylov State Research Center.

Rinat Mistakhov, General Director of Ak Bars, emphasized that Ecobalt serves as a prototype to further develop hydrogen technology and create a universal power unit utilizing fuel cells.

He highlighted the advantages of fuel cell-powered systems over traditional diesel engines, including significantly reduced noise and vibration levels, improved fuel efficiency, and overall higher energy efficiency.

The upcoming sea trials will not only test the ship's performance but also provide insights into the potential of hydrogen as a sustainable energy source for the maritime industry.

If successful, this could mark a pivotal moment in Russia's efforts to shift toward environmentally friendly shipping technologies.
