Today (Sep. 13) marks the birth anniversary of legendary actor Reyad El Kasabgy, best known for playing the "Shawish Attia" role.

The actor, who passed away fifty years ago, is widely recognized as one of the most prominent comedians in Egypt.

Born in 1903, El Kasabgy started his career as a train conductor and then joined the railway theater troupe. Later, he joined Ahmad Al-Shaamy's amateur troupe, but this was not enough to put bread on the table.

El Kasabgy formed a popular comic pairing with Ismail Yassin, in the “Ismail Yassin in the Army” style, making the producers use them in several films. Their most famous films together were ‘Al-Anessa Hanafy (Miss Hanafy) (1954), followed by 'Ismail Yassine Fil Ustul' (1957) and 'Ismail Yassin Fil Police' (1959).

Despite playing villain roles, El Kasabgy managed to develop his own comedic style and running jokes.

He is also known for 'Amir El-Inteqam' (1950), 'Qalbi Dalili' (1947), 'Hanan' (1944), 'Raya wa Sekina' (1953) and 'Hob Fi Hob' (1960).

On April 23, 1963, El Kasabgy breathed his last at the age of 60 after he spent years suffering from a rare illness.
