North Korea's official news agency reported that Kim "received a car made in Russia for the personal use of Vladimir Putin, President of the Russian Federation."

The agency added that Yoo Jong, Kim's influential sister, said that "the gift is clear evidence of the special personal relationships between the top leaders of the two countries." The agency did not specify the model of the car.

This gift would constitute a violation of sanctions, including the import of vehicles, imposed by the United Nations on Pyongyang in 2017, and which Russia also signed.

Since the North Korean leader's visit to Russia last year, relations between Pyongyang and Moscow have witnessed a rapprochement.

A group of Russian tourists arrived earlier this month in North Korea on a four-day trip, the first known foreign group to visit the country since the borders were closed due to the Corona virus pandemic.

After Kim and Putin's summit in the Russian Far East in September, the United States and South Korea repeatedly claimed that North Korea shipped weapons to Moscow for use in its war against Ukraine in exchange for Russian assistance with North Korea's satellite programs.

Kim is famous for his taste in luxury cars. He has been spotted using Lexus SUVs and Mercedes-Benz S-Class models.
