According to Imperial Household Law 1947, non-royal women must abandon their imperial status if they marry a commoner. The former Princess renounced a government grant of 150 million yen (more than 1.3 million dollars).

The former Princess' departure caused financial dispute between Kei Komuro's mother and her ex-fiancé who owed him 4 million yen (about 2.5 million dollars). Komuro resolved the dispute on Nov 13th, and promised to pay the required amount.

Mako and Kei Komuro have known each other since 2012, but critics considered him not suitable for her, as the wedding has been postponed several times.
