President Sisi Meets Colombian President Gustavo Petro in Cairo

President Abdel Fattah El-Sisi received President Gustavo Petro of the Republic of Colombia today at the Presidential Palace in Cairo, in the presence of Badr Abdelatty, Egypt’s Minister of Foreign Affairs. 

The Colombian delegation included Ms. Rosa Yolanda Villavicencio, Minister of Foreign Affairs; Ambassador Luz Elena Martínez Casab, Colombia’s Ambassador to Cairo; and Víctor de Curia, Presidential Advisor for Middle Eastern Affairs.

According to a statement by Mohamed El-Shenawy, Spokesperson for the Presidency, President Sisi welcomed his Colombian counterpart on his second visit to Egypt, praising the deep-rooted historical relations between the two nations. 

He reaffirmed Egypt’s commitment to strengthening bilateral cooperation across multiple fields, particularly in economic and trade relations, while emphasizing the importance of continued coordination in international forums on issues of common concern to developing countries, foremost among them achieving sustainable development goals and addressing associated developmental challenges.

The meeting featured in-depth discussions on expanding cooperation in key sectors, including trade, renewable energy, aviation, and culture, as well as exchanging expertise in combating transnational organized crime and terrorism.

President Petro expressed his appreciation for the growing bilateral ties between Egypt and Colombia, commending the significant increase in trade volume over the past five years. He highlighted the importance of building on this momentum to further boost economic relations. The Colombian leader also extended congratulations to President El-Sisi on the inauguration of the Grand Egyptian Museum, describing it as a historic cultural achievement and expressing his deep admiration for Egypt’s ancient civilization.

On regional developments, the two presidents exchanged views on current crises in the Middle East. President El-Sisi briefed his Colombian counterpart on the outcomes of the Sharm El-Sheikh Peace Summit and the implementation of the Gaza ceasefire agreement, commending Colombia’s humanitarian assistance initiative to the Gaza Strip.

President Petro, in turn, praised Egypt’s intensive efforts under President El-Sisi’s leadership to end the war and alleviate the humanitarian catastrophe, underscoring the importance of fully implementing the ceasefire and accelerating Gaza’s reconstruction process. He confirmed Colombia’s readiness to actively participate in the implementation of the ceasefire agreement and to continue providing humanitarian aid to the Palestinian people.

In this regard, President El-Sisi announced Egypt’s intention to host the International Conference for Early Recovery and Reconstruction of Gaza in November 2025.

Both leaders also discussed a range of regional and international crises, emphasizing the need to resolve conflicts through peaceful means, with full respect for state sovereignty, territorial integrity, and the aspirations of peoples. The two sides agreed to continue coordination and deepen cooperation in areas of mutual interest.
