Pakistani intelligence sources have confirmed the arrest of Sultan Aziz Azzam, the media chief of the Islamic State Khorasan Province (ISKP), in May 2025. The confirmation was given to Pakistan Television by security officials familiar with the operation.
Azzam, who was born in 1978 in Afghanistan’s Nangarhar province, is a graduate of Nangarhar University and headed ISKP’s Al-Azaim media network, which has played a central role in the group’s propaganda and recruitment efforts. He joined ISKP in 2016 and quickly rose within its media apparatus.
According to intelligence sources, Azzam was apprehended while attempting to cross into Pakistan. His arrest marks a significant development in counterterrorism efforts targeting ISKP’s operational and media infrastructure.
The United States designated Sultan Aziz Azzam as a Specially Designated Global Terrorist in November 2021, citing his role in directing extremist media content and supporting ISKP’s violent activities across the region.
Security officials said investigations are ongoing, and the arrest reflects continued cooperation and vigilance against transnational militant networks operating in and around the region.
