Over 46,000 Residents in Japan Told to Evacuate from Typhoon Mawar

On Thursday morning, the Japanese authorities issued an evacuation order for more than 46,000 residents of Nango City in southern Okinawa Prefecture, southern Japan, due to the approach of the devastating typhoon Mawar.

The authorities urged people living in coastal areas, where a level four danger has been declared on a five-level scale, to evacuate to safe places.

While a level three danger has been declared in the city, which requires the early evacuation of the elderly and people with fewer opportunities, according to the Japan Public Broadcasting Corporation.

The devastating "Mawar" typhoon is currently located off the coast of Okinawa, and the pressure at the center of the cyclone is 970 hPa. The wind speed reaches more than 30 meters per second (67 mph), with gusts of up to 45 meters per second.

The typhoon is expected to change direction to the northeast and pass south of the main part of Japan in the next 24 hours.
