The Commissioner-General of the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA), Philippe Lazzarini, announced today that one-third of the agency's schools in Gaza have been hit by Israeli airstrikes in the past four days.
Lazzarini shared this alarming update on the social media platform X, stating that four UNRWA schools have been bombed by the Israeli military, with many of these institutions suffering severe damage.
"Our schools, once safe havens for education, have become overcrowded shelters," he noted, adding, "often they turn into places of death and misery."
On Saturday, an Israeli airstrike targeted a school sheltering displaced people in the Nuseirat refugee camp in central Gaza, killing 16 Palestinians, most of them women and children.
The Gaza Strip is facing a dire humanitarian crisis, with severe shortages of water and food. The destruction of infrastructure, including water purification lines and stations by the Israeli military, has exacerbated these conditions.
The United Nations has warned of a looming hunger crisis affecting Gaza's residents as the conflict between Hamas and Israel continues.
Since the devastating war erupted on October 7, 2023, the Israeli army has imposed a strict blockade on Gaza, cutting off water, food, medicine, electricity, and fuel supplies to its 2.3 million residents, who were already living in extremely deteriorated conditions.
