Elderly people around the world
Although it is a biological fact that occurs outside the realm of human control, its definition varies from one community to another. The concept of ageing is relative, most countries consider ageing and retirement as an indicator of old age, and this age often ranges from (60-65 years), However, in several other regions, age is not taken into account to determine a person's ageing, as there are other factors that determine retirement age, such as the ability to do work, which means that, old age begins when a person is unable to participate effectively in the society.
Statistics from the United Nations Report 2019 of the World Population Prospects show the following:
• By 2050, 16% of the world's population (one in six people) will be over the age of 65, with an increase 7% (one out of 11) than in 2019.
• In Europe and North America, a quarter of the population is expected to be over the age of 65.
• 2018 was the first year in history globally that elderly people over the age of 65 were more than children under five.
• The number of people over 80 is expected to triple (from 143 million in 2019 to 426 million in 2050).
• The number of individuals classified as older working age (55 to 64 years) is expected to rise from 723 million in 2021 to 1075 million in 2050, and eventually to 1218 million by 2100.
