Khabib Nurmagomedov deated Dustin Poirier at UFC 242 for the undisputed lightweight title in his possession in addition to earning a sum of 6 million dollars and a $50,000 "Performance of the Night" bonus.

Before Saturday's UFC 242, Nurmagomedov's most recent fight was an October 2018 submission win over Conor McGregor. The bout was Nurmagomedov's first defense of the lightweight title and Mcgregor's first MMA fight since he fought Floyd Mayweather in a big boxing fight. Khabib dominated Mcgregor throughout the fight before submitting him in the 4th round.

However, things turned rough really fast as Nurmagomedov leaped from the cage after his win and attempted to get his hands on Dillon Danis, who was cageside as a member of McGregor's corner team.

The Nevada State Athletic Commission suspended Nurmagomedov for nine months and fined him $500,000 of his $2 million payout for his actions that night inside T-Mobile Arena in Las Vegas.

Nurmagomedov's father Abdulmanap said prior to the fight "We'll make 3 to 3,5 more (than the last time)," he explained. "We aren't fighting for a small change, we know what we're worth. It ($2 million) is not enough for us, because we are the best now. We've beaten the best, and we are ready to fight the best. We are popular, we know that. When we'll enter the arena, you'll see the reaction to us, and reaction to Poirier."

While Nurmagomedov served his suspension, the UFC opted to crown an interim champion. Dustin Poirier claimed that title in April with a dominating win over Max Holloway in the main event of UFC 236. Nurmagomedov then defeated Poirier in a title unification bout on Saturday in the main event of UFC 242, which took place at The Arena at Yas Island in Abu Dhabi.
