The League of Arab States and the Hague Conference on Private International Law (HCCH) signed a memorandum of understanding on Tuesday aimed at enhancing legal cooperation and harmonizing cross-border regulations.

Arab League Secretary-General Ahmed Aboul Gheit received HCCH Secretary-General Christophe Bernasconi at the League’s headquarters in Cairo to formalize the partnership. The agreement marks a significant institutional step toward deepening the exchange of expertise between the two organizations.

During the meeting, Aboul Gheit highlighted the HCCH’s role as a primary international reference for unifying private international law. He noted that such frameworks are essential for addressing modern challenges, including the protection of children and families and the resolution of legal conflicts arising from the global movement of people and capital.

"Today’s world no longer recognizes rigid boundaries in the movement of individuals, capital, and investments," said Gamal Rushdi, spokesperson for the Secretary-General. Rushdi added that private international law is a vital tool for facilitating commercial relations and protecting individual rights across borders.

Bernasconi provided an overview of the HCCH’s current activities and expressed the organization’s commitment to strengthening mutual trust and legal coordination with Arab League member states.

The signing ceremony concludes Bernasconi’s official visit to the pan-Arab organization, signaling a new phase of cooperation in developing international conventions and practical legal mechanisms.
