The government of Myanmar, currently under military control, has decided to extend the state of emergency in the country, which has been in effect since the overthrow of the civilian government nearly a year and a half ago.

As reported by official media outlets and cited by ABC News today, Monday, the National Defense and Security Council convened in the capital Naypyidaw and approved a six-month extension of the state of emergency, starting tomorrow, Tuesday.

This move indicates the likely postponement of the promised general elections, which were scheduled to take place in August.

It is worth noting that the state of emergency was declared when the country's leader, Aung San Suu Kyi, along with senior officials from her government and members of her party, the National League for Democracy, were arrested on February 1, 2021.

The military claimed that it took power due to allegations of electoral fraud during the last general elections held in November 2020, in which Suu Kyi's party achieved a sweeping victory.

The coup was met with widespread protests, which were brutally suppressed by security forces.
