More than 20,000 federal employees have told the U.S. government that they are ready to resign from their jobs under an incentive program with a deadline on Thursday, according to Reuters.
Last week, the White House offered two million full-time federal civil servants the opportunity to stop working this week with wages and benefits received until September 30, as the Trump administration seeks to reduce the size of the US government.
Some Democrats say the offer is illegal.
The White House said on Sunday that it had exempted public safety personnel, including air traffic controllers, from the "deferred resignation program." The White House Office of Personnel Management defended the program's legal status in a memo to agencies on Tuesday.
