Microsoft has notified more than a dozen state agencies and a public university in Texas that state-sponsored Russian hackers have accessed emails between them and the software giant.
The hackers gained access to the communications through a breach of Microsoft’s systems that was disclosed in January, stealing emails from some of the company’s executives.
The agencies that Microsoft warned were vulnerable to the attack include the Texas Department of Transportation and Motor Vehicles, the state Workforce Commission, its General Land Office and its Securities and Exchange Board.
Microsoft has blamed the attack on a hacking group it calls Midnight Blizzard, which is linked to Russia’s intelligence services.
The state and Microsoft are still studying the impact of the breach.
