Mexican actress Melissa Barrera has been dropped from the upcoming movie"Scream 7".
Barrera was dismissed from the pic due to comments she made about the Israel-Palestine conflict on social media.
"Scream 7" filmmaker Christopher Landon has responded to the news of its two-time franchise star‘s firing by Spyglass Media.
Landon originally tweeted on his @creetureshow account and removed the Tweet thereafter.
Christopher Landon’s X post on Melissa Barrera being dropped from Scream VII:“This is my statement: 💔 Everything sucks. Stop yelling. This was not my decision to make,” Landon wrote on X.
Spyglass Media went public with the reason behind the decision, saying, “Spyglass’ stance is unequivocally clear: We have zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form, including false references to genocide, ethnic cleansing, Holocaust distortion or anything that flagrantly crosses the line into hate speech.”
Barrera, who came to fame in Starz’s series Vida before being propelled to Warner Bros. feature musical In the Heights and 2022’s Scream and this year’s Scream VI as Sam Carpenter, sister of Jenna Ortega’s Tara Carpenter, reposted a series of Pro-Palestinian posts to her Instagram stories, which were interpreted as being anti-Semitic by those close to the movie production.
Post SAG-AFTRA strike, Spyglass Media has yet to announce any returning cast members or new cast for the pic.
The Scream franchise has grossed close to $911M worldwide through six movies. The last two movies were produced and financed by Spyglass Media, which has control over the Dimension library, and released worldwide by Paramount Pictures.
"Scream” fans decried Spyglass Media’s decision Tuesday to part ways with Barrera.
Some fans were so upset by the studio’s decision to oust Barrera that they vowed to boycott “Scream 7.”
“I cannot imagine that film without her and ‘Scream 7’ will suffer terribly because of this awful decision,” wrote designer and critic @thisisnotahmad in a post whose likes were fast approaching 7,000.
Additionally, UTA had dropped Susan Sarandon after remarks made at a pro-Palestinian rally in New York City.
Maha Dakhil, one of CAA's top agents, had ignited a firestorm with her Instagram posts, including one that said, “What’s more heartbreaking than witnessing genocide? Witnessing the denial that genocide is happening.”
In response, Dakhil was relieved of her duties as co-chief the motion pictures department, though she was allowed to remain an agent. It didn’t hurt that her most important client, Tom Cruise, made it known to CAA that he was backing her.
Cruise met with Dakhil at her CAA office on November 15. A knowledgeable source says he took the rare step of going in person to show support for his embattled agent.
