Union Berlin played their first match under new head coach Marie-Louise Etta, as the German side faced VfL Wolfsburg on Saturday in the 30th round of the Bundesliga.
The match marked a historic moment, as Etta became the first female coach to take charge of a men’s team in one of Europe’s major leagues.
However, Union Berlin suffered a narrow 2–1 defeat at home. Wolfsburg took the lead early through Patrick Wimmer in the 11th minute, before Dzenan Pejcinovic doubled the advantage shortly after the restart in the 46th minute.
Union Berlin managed to reduce the deficit in the 85th minute through Oliver Burke, but were unable to complete the comeback.
Despite the loss, Etta received praise for her team’s performance.
Statistical data showed Union Berlin dominance in attacking metrics, registering 25 shots compared to 5 for Wolfsburg, along with 3 big chances created.
The expected goals (xG) also favored the hosts at 2.09 versus 0.19 for the visitors.
Union Berlin remain on 32 points in 11th place, having now suffered their 14th league defeat of the season.
Etta, 34, was appointed after impressive work with Union Berlin’s U19 team earlier this season, and her debut has already drawn significant attention across German football despite the result.
