Nevin Gamea, Minister of Trade and Industry issued Decision on Saturday to appoint Mahmoud Ahmed Momtaz as Chairman of the Egyptian Competition Authority (ECA).
The minister chose Momtaz as he is one of the young cadres, who enjoys a a big experience in the field of competition protection, and who held a prominent international position in the World Bank that qualifies him to lead the authority.
Momtaz holds a PhD. in competition law and economics from the Faculty of Law at the University of Hamburg, Germany, and a master's degree in international business administration from the German University in Cairo (GUC).
The new chairman also holds a diploma in Marketing from the Chartered College in the United Kingdom.
Momtaz worked as the World Bank's Private Sector Development Officer at the headquarters in Washington, since 2018. He was responsible for several files related to competition protection, private sector development and competition in the Middle East and North Africa (MENA) in addition to Southeast Asia.
He is one of the founders of the ECA. He was the director of the Competition Policy Department in addition to Case Management and Research until June 2018.
During his work in the Authority, he managed many issues in the field of competition protection in most sectors of the Egyptian economy. He also made recommendations to amend many draft laws and government decisions restricting competition, and developed a guide for companies' compliance with the competition protection law.
Momtaz has many research publications in the field of competition protection in the accredited international journals and periodicals of the World Bank, the Global Competition Journal, the Journal of European Competition Law, and the Journal of Antitrust in Europe, the Middle East and Africa.
