History

Magra' Al-Ayoun Wall is one of the most important Islamic monuments in Egypt, built in 1184 AD during the reign of Salahuddin al-Ayyubi to transport water from the Nile River to the Citadel of Salahuddin in Cairo. It was later renovated during the reign of Sultan Mohammed bin Qalawun in 1312 AD and Sultan al-Ghuri in 1501 AD.

Description

Magra' Al-Ayoun Wall extends for 3.5 kilometers and consists of two main towers, one called the intake tower and the other called the distribution tower. The intake tower contains six waterwheels, which rise about 12 meters above the ground and are used to lift water from the Nile to the canals that transport water to the Citadel.

Importance

Magra' Al-Ayoun Wall represents a unique engineering achievement, built with carved stone that reflects the skill of Egyptian engineers at that time. The wall also reflects the importance of water in Egyptian civilization, as water was one of the most important sources of life in ancient Egypt.
