Today, Monday, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko warned the European Union (EU) countries that at a certain stage it would resort to stopping gas supplies to the member-states 0f the bloc.

In an interview with Turkish media, the Belarusian president said, "If the sanctions that they have imposed or will impose will make us in a state of emergency, and we have no way out to respond with other measures to their sanctions, we will use this strict measure as well."

This is not the first time that the Belarusian president has waved a gas card in the face of the European Union against the backdrop of the sanctions imposed against his country, as well as against the backdrop of the migrant crisis at the border between Belarus and the European Union.

Since mid-November, Belarusian President Alexander Lukashenko has threatened a harsh response if the European Union adopts new sanctions against his country.

Lukashenko said that accusations are being brought against his country for allegedly being behind the migrant crisis at the border with the European Union, so the latter threatened to impose a new package of sanctions against Minsk.

The Belarusian president stressed that his country is not a party to the migrant crisis.

He added that they terrorize us with sanctions.

He went on to say that they think I'm joking, this is not so. We will defend ourselves and there is no way to back down."

Earlier, Lukashenko warned the European Union against imposing new sanctions on his country, and indicated that Belarus had stopped the flow of Russian gas through its territory to Europe in response to the expansion of sanctions.

The situation remains tense on the border between Belarus and the European Union, after thousands of migrants, who are trying to cross the border into Poland and then enter Germany, have gathered.
