The German airline Lufthansa announced on Wednesday that it had initially suspended its flights to and from Tehran until Thursday due to the current situation in the Middle East.

The company said in a statement that it "is constantly monitoring the situation in the Middle East and we are in close contact with the authorities."

A German newspaper reported, quoting a company spokesman: “Lufthansa has decided, after careful evaluation, to suspend flights to and from Tehran until Thursday, April 11, 2024.”

It added: “The safety of our guests and crew members is Lufthansa’s top priority.”

The airline spokeswoman did not give specific reasons, limiting herself to wording that said the decision was taken in relation to “the current situation in the Middle East.”

In recent years, Lufthans has suspended its flights with Tehran several times, in particular, in connection with the mass protests after the death of Mahsa Amini, as well as after a drone attack on the city of Isfahan.

Last Monday, Israeli aircraft targeted the Iranian consulate building in Damascus, causing major destruction there and in neighboring buildings, and killing everyone inside the building, including the two Brigadier Generals of the Revolutionary Guard, and 5 of the officers accompanying them.

Iranian President Ibrahim Raisi stressed that “this cowardly crime will definitely not remain without a response.”
