President Abdel Fattah El Sisi held talks today, Wednesday, at the summit level with Greek Prime Minister Kyriakos Mitsotakis, within the framework of his official visit to the Greek capital, Athens. Both leaders discussed Libya, East Mediterranean and counter-terrorism.
The Spokesman for the Egyptian Presidency, Bassam Rady, stated that the Greek Prime Minister welcomed Sisi in Greece as a dear friend, expressing his country's appreciation to Egypt both leadership and people.
The Greek PM praised the close bilateral relations between Cairo and Athens and Greece, affirming his country's keenness to continue developing the relations and strengthening cooperation and coordination between the two countries at all levels, especially in light of Egypt's pivotal role as a pillar of stability, security and peace in the Middle East, Eastern Mediterranean and African regions.
On his part, Sisi expressed appreciation to the Greek Prime Minister for the warm reception and generous hospitality, praising the specificity of the historical relations between Egypt and Greece and the extent of their distinction, according to Rady.
“Sisi expressed Egypt's interest in developing bilateral relations in all fields and intensifying coordination and political consultation between the two countries,” he added.
He noted that “The two leaders discussed ways to strengthen bilateral relations at various levels, as Mitsotakis lauded in this regard the comprehensive economic reforms in Egypt.”
In this regard, the Egyptian President stressed the importance of working to maximize the mechanisms of bilateral cooperation at various levels, in light of the consistency of interests and common positions between the two countries in the Eastern Mediterranean region, affirming that the Eastern Mediterranean Gas Forum represents one of the most important tools in this framework.
The spokesman manifested that the talks also touched on various developments in regional issues of common interest, especially those related to the Eastern Mediterranean and developments in the Libyan situation.
Sisi reviewed Egypt's vision for a political solution in Libya and its efforts aimed mainly at restoring the role of state institutions.
They also tackled developments in combating intolerance speech and extremist ideology.
“The President stressed the necessity of concerted efforts by the international community to establish the values of mutual respect and not offend the sacred religious symbols,” Rady noted.
In this context, Mitsotakis agreed with Egypt’s vision, praising the comprehensive approach taken by Cairo to promote the values of tolerance, coexistence, dialogue among civilizations and respect for religions.
