Leighton Meester to Star in "The Weekend Away" Adaptation

The "Gossip Girl" actress Leighton Meester will star in the upcoming Netflix thriller movie "The Weekend Away".

Meester stars as a woman who jets off to Croatia for a weekend getaway with her best friend, however, things takes turn for the worse after her friend turns up dead, leaving her as the prime suspect. While she tries to clear her name, she dredges up painful secrets hidden between the two.

The movie will be adapted from the novel of the same name by Sarah Alderson, who is set to return to adapt the script.

Alderson specializes both in thrillers for adults and YA novels.

Australian filmmaker Kim Farrant will be handling directing duties for the mystery.

The movie also stars the "Batwoman" actress Christina Wolfe, Ziad Bakri, and Luke Norris.

Meester most recently starred on the ABC sitcom "Single Parents".

The actress is best known for her lead role on The CW's "Gossip Girl", which ran on The CW from 2007 to 2012. She starred alongside Blake Lively and Penn Badgley as students at an elite New York City private high school.
