The Laureus World Sports Awards 2026 gathered the biggest names in international sport in Madrid, honoring outstanding achievements, resilience, and excellence across multiple disciplines.

Often referred to as the “Oscars of Sport,” the ceremony highlighted both rising stars and established legends, reflecting the global reach and diversity of modern athletics.

Leading the individual honors, Carlos Alcaraz was named World Sportsman of the Year after a remarkable season that included multiple Grand Slam titles and a return to the world No.1 ranking.

In the women’s category, Aryna Sabalenka claimed the top prize following a dominant year in which she maintained consistent performances and held the top global ranking.

Team of the Year was awarded to Paris Saint-Germain, recognized for a historic campaign that saw the club secure multiple trophies, including their first UEFA Champions League title.

In motorsport, Lando Norris earned Breakthrough of the Year honors after clinching his first Formula One world championship.

Among other major winners, Rory McIlroy was named Comeback of the Year, while Chloe Kim took Action Sportsperson of the Year.

Gabriel Araújo was recognized as Sportsperson of the Year with a Disability, and rising football talent Lamine Yamal secured the Young Sportsperson award.

Special honors highlighted long-term impact and legacy in sport. Toni Kroos received the Sporting Inspiration Award for his influence and consistency, while gymnastics icon Nadia Comăneci was presented with the Lifetime Achievement Award, marking 50 years since her historic perfect 10 at the Olympics.

The Sport for Good Award was given to Fútbol Más for its global community initiatives.

The ceremony also underscored tennis’s dominance in 2026, with both top individual awards going to players from the sport.

Alcaraz and Sabalenka’s achievements were widely seen as emblematic of a new generation of global superstars shaping the future of athletics.

Notably, no Indian athletes featured among this year’s winners, highlighting the ongoing challenge of translating emerging talent into consistent global success at the highest level.

The event was hosted by Novak Djokovic and Eileen Gu, whose presence added further prestige and international appeal to one of the most celebrated nights in world sport.
