Argentine side Lanús won the 2025 Copa Sudamericana title after defeating Brazil’s Atlético Mineiro 5–4 on penalties, following a goalless draw between the two teams in the final held on Saturday evening at Estadio Defensores del Chaco in Asunción, the capital of Paraguay.
Both regular and extra time ended in a 0–0 draw in a match marked by intensity and caution from both sides.
The winner was decided by a penalty shootout that saw an outstanding performance from Lanús goalkeeper Losada, who became the undisputed hero of the night after saving three penalties, including the decisive final kick that secured the trophy for his team.
This title is the third international championship in Lanús’ history, after previously winning the 2013 Copa Sudamericana and the 1996 Copa CONMEBOL, and they also once finished as runners-up in the Copa Libertadores.
Atlético Mineiro was aiming to add another international title to their cabinet, having previously won the 2013 Copa Libertadores, the CONMEBOL Cup in 1992 and 1997, and the 2014 Recopa Sudamericana, but luck was not on their side this time.
The two teams reached the final through different paths: Lanús qualified after defeating Universidad de Chile 3–2 on aggregate in the semifinals, while Atlético Mineiro overcame Independiente del Valle 4–2 on aggregate across the two-legged semifinal.
