Kuwait's high committee for investigating citizenship revocation announced on Thursday that it has moved to revoke the citizenship of 3,701 individuals, a decision that will be presented to the Cabinet for approval.

The committee meeting, chaired by Deputy Prime Minister, Minister of Defense, and Minister of Interior Sheikh Fahd Yusuf Saud Al-Sabah, focused on this significant move.

This action comes on the heels of a recent revision to Kuwait’s citizenship laws. On Monday, the Kuwaiti Official Gazette published Decree Law No. (116) of 2024, which amends certain provisions of the Amiri Decree No. (15) of 1959 concerning Kuwaiti nationality.

The new decree stipulates that acquiring Kuwaiti nationality will no longer automatically grant Kuwaiti citizenship to the foreign spouse of the new citizen, nor to their minor children.

The children will have the option to decide their nationality during the year following their coming of age. It also clarified that marriage to a Kuwaiti citizen does not automatically confer Kuwaiti nationality to a foreign woman.

According to Article 13 of the new law, Kuwaiti nationality may be revoked in several circumstances:

If granted under fraudulent means or false declarations.

If the individual is convicted of a crime that compromises their honor or security, or any crime that threatens the state’s internal or external security.

If the person is dismissed from a government job due to issues related to honor or integrity within 10 years of acquiring citizenship.

If it is determined that revocation is in the best interest of the state or national security.

If evidence is found that the individual promotes ideologies harmful to the country's social or economic order or is affiliated with foreign political groups, revocation can extend to their dependents.
