Kenyan President William Ruto on Wednesday declared national mourning next Friday over the death of 238 people as a result of the floods sweeping the country.

President William Ruto said that Friday will witness trees planting activities to reduce the destructive effects of climate change. He also announced the reopening of schools across the country two weeks after they were closed due to heavy rains that destroyed hundreds of them, according to the ABC network.

The government announced that more than a thousand schools were damaged by heavy rains and floods, and that funds had been allocated for their renovation. Meteorology authorities expect moderate and heavy rain to continue over most parts of the country.k

The floods caused the displacement of more than 235,000 people from their homes.
