Kazakhstan's law enforcement authorities have detained over 5,100 persons for their roles in rioting around the country, according to the Interior Ministry's press service on Sunday.
"As of yet, 5,135 persons have been detained across Kazakhstan," according to the press agency.
125 pre-trial investigations involving killings, violence against government personnel, robberies, hooliganism, and thefts have been begun, according to the ministry.
During the disturbances, more than 400 vehicles were damaged or destroyed, including 346 police vehicles, according to the republic's acting Interior Minister, Yerlan Turgumbayev, who spoke to the Khabar 24 TV channel. More than 100 significant trade facilities and banks have been looted.
On January 2, protests erupted in numerous Kazakh cities, developing into large rioting and the looting of government buildings in several cities a few days later.
Scores of others were hurt in the ensuing fighting, and fatalities were also recorded.
Following that, Kazakhstan's President Kassym-Jomart Tokayev approached the Collective Security Treaty Organization (CSTO), requesting aid from the Russian-led bloc.
Peacekeepers have already been dispatched to Kazakhstan as a result of this. By the morning of January 7, Kazakh authorities claim that law and order had been restored in all of the country's regions.
In Almaty, though, the situation remains tense. Tokayev designated January 10 as a national mourning day in the republic.
