Jordan's Foreign Minister (FM) Ayman Safadi said today, Monday, that the two-state solution is "the only way to end the conflict between the Palestinians and the Israelis."
Safadi’s statement came during the emergency meeting of Arab foreign ministers on Palestine in Cairo.
He added that "the Palestinian issue is the first central issue for the Arabs and is the key to a just and comprehensive peace.
He highlights the need for direct Arab action to support the Palestinian brothers and achieve peace, especially with the start of a new American administration and the new gestures it announced."
Minister of State for Foreign Affairs of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Anwar Gargash, also stated that his country "supports the establishment of a Palestinian state within the 1967 borders."
On his part, the Secretary-General of the League of Arab States, Ahmed Aboul Gheit, indicated that the political settlement of the Palestinian issue "cannot be imposed by unilateral steps, and we have no choice but to go through the path of negotiation."
Aboul Gheit added that the Arab countries speak with one voice when it comes to Palestine.
He pointed out that the Palestinian people "are about to lose confidence in the two-state solution, after the other side withdraws from this solution," stressing that "the Palestinians' withdrawal from the two-state solution will not be in the interest of any party.
On the other hand, Palestinian Foreign Minister Riyad Al-Maliki welcomed the final statement issued by the 34th African Union summit yesterday, Sunday, and the support it contained for the Palestinian cause and the two-state solution.
In a statement, Al-Maliki praised the African leaders ’affirmation of" absolute support for the Palestinian cause, and the right of the Palestinian people to self-determination and establish their independent state with East Jerusalem as its capital."
He also welcomed the African leaders ’affirmation of the two-state solution based on the 1967 borders, recognition of Jerusalem as the capital of the State of Palestine, and the non-recognition of unilateral actions regarding it.
