Japan’s State Minister for Foreign Affairs, Ayako Kunimitsu, concluded a four-day visit to Egypt on Tuesday, where she represented Prime Minister Sanae Takaichi as a special envoy.

The visit, held from October 31 to November 4, underscored the longstanding partnership between Japan and Egypt in cultural, healthcare, and economic cooperation.

Attending the Grand Egyptian Museum’s Opening Ceremony:

On November 1, Dr. Kunimitsu attended the official opening of the Grand Egyptian Museum (GEM) in Giza, a landmark project supported by Japan. The museum has been a cornerstone of Japan’s contribution to Egypt’s cultural preservation, tourism development, and job creation.

During the ceremony, President Abdel-Fattah El-Sisi expressed appreciation for Japan’s continued support. Dr. Kunimitsu also exchanged greetings with several dignitaries, including Palestinian President Mahmoud Abbas, Chairperson of the Palestine Liberation Organization.

The following day, Dr. Kunimitsu toured the museum and met with Dr. Ahmed Ghoneim, CEO of the Grand Egyptian Museum, where both sides reaffirmed the museum’s role as a symbol of Japan-Egypt friendship and cooperation.

Visit to Dar Al-Shifa Hospital:

Also on November 2, the State Minister visited Dar Al-Shifa Hospital on the outskirts of Cairo, accompanied by Dr. Nima Abid, the World Health Organization’s Representative in Egypt. As a physician herself, Dr. Kunimitsu discussed healthcare improvements with hospital officials and observed how Japanese medical expertise and equipment — including the “5S” quality management system (Sort, Set in order, Shine, Standardize, Sustain) — are enhancing healthcare standards in the region.

Meeting with Japanese Business Leaders:

Dr. Kunimitsu also met with representatives of Japanese companies operating in Egypt to exchange views on the country’s business environment. She listened to updates on market conditions and the challenges facing investors, while exploring ways to strengthen bilateral economic cooperation.

The visit highlighted Japan’s ongoing commitment to supporting Egypt’s development and deepening mutual ties across multiple sectors, from cultural heritage and healthcare to trade and investment.
