Japan Earthquake Destroys Over 31,500 Homes

The earthquake that struck Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan on January 1st of this year has left more than 31,500 homes completely or partially destroyed, according to Kyodo News Agency.

Citing local authorities, the agency reported that the largest number of damaged homes was recorded in the residential areas of Nanao and Noto. The total count of destroyed homes reached 31,670.

In the city of Wajima, where "various damages" had been previously reported, 870 homes were affected to varying degrees.

The earthquake, measuring about 7.4 on the Richter scale, struck the Noto Peninsula area of Ishikawa Prefecture in central Japan on January 1, 2024.

The earthquake resulted in the deaths of 232 individuals and injuries to 1,061 others. As of now, 22 people are still missing, and 13,900 people are living in 359 evacuation centers.
