An Israeli media report has warned of an alleged Iranian threat targeting Syrian President Ahmed al-Sharaa, citing intelligence assessments discussed within Israel’s security establishment.

According to Israel’s Walla news outlet, Israeli security officials believe Iran is coordinating with hostile actors to undermine President al-Sharaa’s rule and potentially carry out an attack against him. The report said the intelligence warnings were presented during closed-door security discussions chaired by Israeli Defense Minister Israel Katz, with the participation of senior military and intelligence officials.

Following these deliberations, Israeli decision-makers reportedly concluded that withdrawing from the security zone adjacent to Syria would be a strategic mistake. The report noted that Israel intends to maintain its military presence in areas near the Syrian border, including the summit of Mount Hermon, arguing that lessons learned from the events of October 7 necessitate continued deployment inside Syrian territory.

Israeli officials reportedly described this presence as a forward defensive shield aimed at protecting Israeli communities along the border. The military strategy in Syria, according to the report, is divided into three operational zones: direct border contact areas where Israeli forces secure nearby settlements; an expanded security zone extending up to roughly 15 kilometers inside Syria to prevent armed infiltration and hostile infrastructure; and a wider influence zone stretching from southern Suwayda toward the outskirts of Damascus, monitored to prevent the entry of hostile forces, advanced weapons, or the establishment of military bases.
