Israel has temporarily closed parts of its natural gas infrastructure following military strikes on Iran carried out by Israel and the United States on Saturday, according to official and industry sources.

Israel’s Energy Ministry ordered the precautionary shutdown of certain natural gas facilities amid heightened regional tensions and security concerns.

Three sources told Reuters that the Leviathan gas field, located offshore in the eastern Mediterranean and operated by Chevron, has been closed. The Leviathan field is one of Israel’s largest energy assets and plays a key role in supplying domestic demand and regional exports.

Energy company Energean also confirmed in a statement that its production vessel, which services several Israeli gas fields, has been shut down as part of the emergency measures.

The closures underscore growing risks to energy infrastructure in the Middle East as geopolitical tensions escalate following coordinated strikes on Iranian targets. Israel’s offshore gas platforms are considered strategically important facilities and have previously been placed on alert during periods of regional conflict.

Officials have not specified how long the shutdown will remain in effect, but the move reflects immediate efforts to safeguard critical energy assets amid potential retaliation threats.
