Iraq’s Ministry of Interior has announced the commencement of a project to install 100 kilometers of concrete wall along its border with Syria, marking a significant step in strengthening security measures between the two countries.

In recent years, the Iraqi government has implemented a series of border security initiatives, including the deployment of thermal cameras, the digging of trenches, and the installation of concrete barriers to deter the movement of militants across its western frontier.

The latest concrete wall construction, spanning critical northern and southern sections along the Euphrates River in the Turaifawi area of western Anbar Province, is expected to substantially bolster these efforts.

The ministry’s statement emphasized that this comprehensive border fortification has achieved an unprecedented level of control over Iraq’s border with Syria.

For years, this border has been a source of concern for Iraqi authorities, frequently used by ISIS elements to move between the two countries.

Over the past two years, the Ministry of Interior has intensified its focus on border security, increasing patrol units and establishing additional border outposts.

This initiative follows a 10-billion-dinar ($6.8 million USD) allocation by Iraq’s Council of Ministers in 2023 to further secure the frontier.
