The Iraq Football Association have formally asked FIFA to postpone Iraq’s upcoming intercontinental playoff match for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, which is scheduled for March 31 in Monterrey.
According to informed sources, the request was submitted due to major travel difficulties and ongoing security concerns in the region.
The situation has made it difficult for the Iraqi national team delegation to depart from Baghdad after the closure of airspace and rising security risks.
Officials indicated that there is a genuine security crisis that could threaten the safety of the team’s delegation during travel.
The concerns were heightened after the United States Department of State issued a warning noting that parts of southern Turkey are currently unsafe due to ongoing military operations.
The Iraqi federation is awaiting FIFA’s response regarding the request, as the team’s preparations for the crucial World Cup playoff remain uncertain amid the regional security developments.
