Iraq has shut down its airspace in the wake of Israel’s attack on Iran, Iraqi authorities announced Saturday.

The spokesperson for the Ministry of Transport, Maytham Al-Safi, told the state-run Iraqi News Agency that the ministry had ordered the full closure of Iraqi airspace. He added that all aircraft had been cleared from Iraqi skies prior to the suspension of flights.

The move comes after Israel’s defense minister announced the launch of what he described as a “preemptive attack” against Iran.

Earlier Saturday, Iran’s Fars News Agency reported hearing three explosions in central Tehran, accompanied by heavy plumes of smoke. Initial reports indicated that several missiles struck Daneshgah Street and the Jomhouri area in the heart of the capital.

Explosions were also reportedly heard in northern and eastern parts of Tehran, as regional tensions escalated sharply following the Israeli operation.
