Ayatollah Ahmad Khatami, a member of Iran's Assembly of Experts (which temporarily manages Iranian affairs), stated that the names of the proposed candidates for the position of Supreme Leader have been finalized.
He added, "We are close to selecting the new leader and are working within the legal framework," noting that enemies are attempting to undermine the Assembly of Experts following the assassination of Khamenei.
On Tuesday evening, Israeli media outlets reported statements from an Israeli official confirming that a meeting of the 88-member Assembly of Experts was targeted. The official claimed the meeting was convened in Tehran to select a new Supreme Leader, according to Israel's Channel 12.
For its part, Iran denied that such a meeting took place, asserting that no such meeting of the Assembly had been held and that these statements were part of Israel's psychological warfare campaign.
