The Iran football national team have outlined their preparation plans for the 2026 FIFA World Cup, set to be hosted by the United States, Canada, and Mexico, with the tournament expanding to 48 teams for the first time in history, starting on June 11.
Despite the planning, uncertainty remains over Iran’s participation due to ongoing political tensions, particularly involving the United States and Israel.
Iran were scheduled to play two of their group stage matches in Los Angeles and another in Seattle, raising questions about logistics and potential complications.
Iran have been drawn into Group G alongside Belgium, New Zealand, and Egypt, in what is expected to be one of the tournament’s most closely watched groups.
According to Tehran Times, the team will travel to Turkey on May 12 for a pre-tournament training camp, which will include foreign-based players.
The camp is set to feature three friendly matches, followed by two additional friendlies in June.
The report added that the Iranian Football Federation is currently negotiating with several federations to arrange warm-up matches, including a potential fixture against Panama national team, which could serve as the final test before the World Cup begins.
At present, Iran are holding the first phase of their preparations in Tehran, with a 30-player preliminary squad made up of domestic league players, following the decision to postpone the Iranian league until after the World Cup.
Head coach Amir Ghalenoei has opted to begin preparations early to ensure the team is fully ready for the tournament.
