Minister of International Cooperation Dr. Rania Al-Mashat announced during the launch of the 2020 Annual Report that the Ministry of International Cooperation launched the first SDG mapping framework online to track Egypt’s SDG-aligned development progress.

This is the first of its kind mapping exercise to be carried out in North Africa and the MENA region, which highlights a number of cross-cutting themes, including Goal 1, No Poverty; Goal 5, Gender Equality; Goal 10, Reducing inequality; Goal 12, Responsible Consumption and Production; Goal 13, Climate Act; as well as Goal 17, Global Partnership for Sustainable Development.

The mapping framework reveals that 50% of ODA allocations are directed toward lagging regions to combat multidimensional poverty. Alleviating poverty is regarded as one of Egypt’s top priorities, which will help in achieving many of the SDGs, such as Zero Hunger, Quality Education, Clean Water and Sanitation, and Gender Equality.

The top three funded sectors are to be Goal 7 for Affordable and Clean Energy; Goal 9 Industries, Innovations, and Infrastructure; and Goal 6 Clean Water and Sanitation, receiving collectively 62% of ODA financing.

For Goal 7 for Affordable and Clean Energy, there are 34 projects worth 5,950 USD (M); 36 projects worth 5,737 USD (M) for Goal 9, and 43 projects worth 4,999 USD (M) for Goal 6. Across all the SDGs, there are a total of about 377 projects all amounting to $25.662 billion.

INTERACTIVE ONLINE MAPPING

To help audiences visualize Egypt’s SDG-aligned development story, the ODA SDG mapping exercise is presented online through the new interactive website launched by the Ministry.

The website aims to bridge Egypt’s local success stories with global and local audiences to provide ready-made roadmaps and blueprints for all countries to follow and showcase Egypt’s development through a multilateral lens; illustrating how the ministry works to apply the principles of economic diplomacy and foster inclusive partnerships to push Egypt’s development forward.

Through an interactive map of Egypt, the website allows the user to track the progress and projects being implemented for each SDG goal; exploring each SDG inpidually to see the number of projects and partners involved to achieve the targets of the goal.

The SDGs map will enable local and global populations, policy decision-makers, researchers, academicians, and others interested in human development to easily track Egypt’s SDGs performance via innovative visualizations and innovative web tools.

The website will also allow users to identify the issues they are most passionate about and accordingly, see the progress being implemented in these priorities through an interactive user’s website experience.

According to the annual report by the ministry in 2020, the ministry secured development financing agreements worth $9.8 billion during the year; $6.7 billion for financing sovereign projects, and $3.1 billion in support of the private sector.
