Indonesian Leader Joko Widodo invited Russian President Vladimir Putin and Ukrainian President Volodymyr Zelenskyy to attend the G20 summit amid Russian-Ukrainian war.
"I have invited President Zelensky to attend the G20 summit," said Widodo, suggesting a compromise had been reached following pressure from US President Joe Biden and others to allow Ukraine's participation to strike a balance.
Indonesia has been under heavy pressure from the West, led by the United States, to exclude Russia from the invitation but Jakarta has argued it must remain "impartial".
Putin confirmed in a phone call with the Indonesian leader that he will attend the summit, which will take place on Bali island. Russia is a G20 member, while Ukraine is not.
In addition, Zelenskyy tweeted that he was invited to the summit on Wednesday, following a call with Widodo.
The West has attempted to diplomatically isolate Russia since the beginning of its invasion of Ukraine in February. However, Indonesia has maintained a neutral position as the president called for an immediate end to hostilities and stressed the need for a "peaceful solution".
