Indian authorities announced today that at least 116 people were killed in a crushing stampede during a religious gathering in the northern state of Uttar Pradesh. Many of the victims were women and children.
According to various media reports, the incident is one of the worst disasters of its kind in the region in recent years.
The catastrophe occurred in a village approximately 200 kilometers southeast of the capital, New Delhi. Authorities reported that a massive crowd had gathered in an open area following an invitation from a local religious leader. Videos posted on social media showed bodies piled up outside a local hospital.
