Authorities in the western Indian state of Gujarat evacuated more than 75,000 people from coastal areas as Cyclone Biparjoy approached.
The Indian Meteorological Department reported that the cyclone is centered 180 km off the port of Jakhau in the state of Gujarat, and 270 km off the city of Karachi in Pakistan, according to the Indian "NDTV" channel today, Thursday.
The administration estimated that the cyclone would hit Gujarat this evening, Thursday, and would be accompanied by winds of 150 km per hour.
Heavy rains and cyclones frequently strike the northern Indian Ocean, where tens of millions of people live, but scientists confirm that their frequency and intensity are due to global warming.
